Congestion of the Genitalia

Sexy Roaring 20s

So, does this mean that Doctors were the original prostitutes?

The vibrators that were designed for sexual stimulation were first invented by Kellina Wilkinson in the 1880s to treat what was then called “congestion of the genitalia” and “female hysteria”. For hundreds of years, physicians had been treating women for these illnesses by manually stimulating them with their fingers, however, once the vibrator was introduced, doctors began using it as it allowed them to get the job done more quickly and without much effort. Soon, women began to realize they did not need physicians to sexually stimulate them and there was a movement for women to buy vibrators for themselves and use them for masturbation. The vibrator was still seen as a medical device until the 1900’s.

THE PULSOCON

In 1899, the vibrator was introduced as a home medical appliance and appeared in magazine advertisements by 1904. An ad in a 1918 Sears Roebuck catalog of “aids that every woman appreciates” described a $5.95 portable model as “very useful and satisfactory for home service.”  Two decades later, Dr. Mortimer Granville of Britain invented the electromechanical vibrator, though he intended it solely for male skeletal muscles and warned that it would be morally indefensible to use it on women.

Blood Circulator

MACAURA’S BLOOD CIRCULATOR

Originally sold as the Macaura’s Pulsocon and later renamed the Macaura’s Blood Circulator. The action is a plunging motion of the center disk at the end. There were also applicators that would screw into the center disk. This model was probably on the market until as late as 1920. Made by The British Appliances Manufacturing Company.
